Jury CitationSantos Centre Adelaide was regarded by the jury as the “complete project” that surpassed benchmark expectations in all areas of contemporary interior design practice. This project reveals an impressive understanding of the contribution of workplace design to business success. Using the design of the workplace as a commercial tool, the interior has the potential to contribute to employee satisfaction, the company’s recruitment success and general productivity. The project offers meaning, engagement, visual communication, energy and livability and is evidence of a sophisticated consideration of the needs and requirements of business, ESD, workplace culture and worker comfort. The interior is well integrated with its architectural envelope, with the sculptural stair being particularly well resolved. The workplace interior is a well-judged balance of human, commercial and even whimsical elements. The designer and the client are to be congratulated on their understanding of the importance of the workplace as a contributor to commercial achievement.

Jury CitationThis project heralds a much needed and clever shift in retail design in Australia, in terms of both interior spatial resolution and brand reinforcement. The jury acknowledged that if retail design is about being ahead of the pack, then this project is exemplary. The ingeniously designed progression of spaces through the store is experimental, humorous, explanatory and sophisticated, resulting in a unique and adventurous retail experience that references the edgy aspects of popular and visual culture.

Jury CitationThis interior is the result of a brave and clear concept that communicates a strong story and sense of narrative. The traditional ritual of drinking sake is memorably reflected in the design and a sense of the “Japanese” is clearly evident. The interior embodies simplicity and the design makes a sophisticated use of texture and material. The relationship between the materials used and what is consumed in the establishment has been carefully considered. A strong juxtaposition has been created between the two dining spaces within the interior, which cleverly respond to the different processes of food preparation and presentation in each area.

The interior environment is seamless in relation to its exterior and spaces are robust with carefully selected and designed elements. The resulting interior is a confidently designed environment that does not attempt to conceal its laboratory spaces, but celebrates their presence as powerful and energizing demonstrative elements by displaying them proudly.

Jury CitationA finely crafted, elegant interior that blurs at the edges where it connects with its enclosing architecture and meets its external surroundings. The wonderful sculptural nature of the internal spaces is extended and enlivened by an abundance of natural light. The absence of conventional domestic spatial paradigms and the considered use of materials and finishes complete the composition, ensuring that this family home will bring enjoyment to all who visit and dwell within it, a sentiment that has been wholeheartedly confirmed by the client.

Jury CitationA simple and innovative commercial interior product that offers users and specifiers a high degree of flexibility in terms of space and function. The judges felt that the product employed a considered and constant language of detailing and form, resulting in an elegant and unobtrusive interior element. It would work well within most existing workplace interiors and also in temporary working environments such as construction sites and exhibitions.

Jury CitationThe project embodied a bold and lively contemporary graphic that the jurors felt was a much-needed addition to the textile ranges currently marketed for health care interiors. The timelessness of the designs and the diverse colour palette also give the textile range the potential to appear within other interior projects, offering specifiers options beyond the obvious application.

Jury CitationA limited yet strong use of colour has been achieved through a combination of materials, elements and textures. The dominant blue and charcoal of the vertical surfaces have been softened by billowing curtains, and the colours of each interior element, including the swimming pool itself, are in perfect balance. Clever lighting design has rendered the interior surfaces lustrous, while the curtains and lifebuoy add a touch of whimsy.

Jury CitationA confident project that extends the incorporation of ESD principles by their innovative and integrated use as teaching elements. Various ESD systems have been exposed and cleverly emphasized as education tools, resulting in an interior where the environment quite literally becomes the teacher. The designers have achieved a striking outcome within the constraints of a public education project budget. The innovative manipulation of ESD initiatives has contributed to a refreshingly non-institutional interior that, while robust, is also highly habitable, dynamic and stimulating.
