Dear All,

We herewith would like to inform you about the outcomes of the Conference on Innovation for Capacity Building in Urban Planning in Vietnam which was held last Thursday 7th of May in Hanoi.

Under the guidance of Mr. Trần Ngọc Chính, representatives of universities educating future Urban Planners; relevant ministries; donors; practicing urban planners; and urban planning students came together to discuss improvements in urban planning capacity building in Vietnam.

In the morning we discussed innovations related to the training of future Urban Planners. Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture (HCMUARC); Hanoi University of Architecture (HAU); and Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE) all made presentations on some of the changes they have introduced in the way they train future generations of urban planners.

In the afternoon the Vietnam Institute for Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning (VIAP) made a presentation on the development and implementation of their mid-career training programme and representatives of Worldbank and JICA shared their experiences and initiatives related to capacity building for those involved in the urban planning process in Vietnam.

During the conference HCMUARC and VIAP formally handed over training materials developed with support from the Urban Environmental Planning Programme in Vietnam (UEPP-VN) to their fellow training institutions.

Both in the morning and afternoon active discussion sessions were held which allowed for further exchange of experiences and contributed to the adoption of the “Hanoi Declaration on Innovation in Capacity Building for Urban Planning in Vietnam”. The Declaration among others presents results of a survey taken among conference participants on priority subjects to be included in urban planning training.
