Default UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, in Viet Nam

Who we are:

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that works with countries to protect and promote the sexual and reproductive health of women, men and young people. The close link between reproductive health, women’s empowerment, gender equality and development underlies our work to reduce maternal deaths, achieve universal access to reproductive health services, close the gender gap in education, increase life expectancy and reduce HIV infection rates.

What we do:

UNFPA has been active in Viet Nam since 1977. We work to improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health services through the training of health staff and the provision of essential drugs, equipment and supplies, including contraceptives. By providing accurate information, we support women and men to plan whether, when and how many children to have, and to protect themselves from unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Our activities aim to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable, including ethnic minorities, unauthorised migrants and people living with and affected by HIV.

Good practice is based on sound policies. We work with government ministries to review population and reproductive health policies that will enable Viet Nam to reach the international goals to which it has committed. We are also assisting Viet Nam collect demographic data and prepare for the national 2009 census.

Where we work:

UNFPA-Viet Nam works at the central policy level for the benefit of all Vietnamese. Our current priority provinces are those with high maternal and newborn death rates and limited sexual and reproductive health services. We are active in: Ha Giang, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Ninh Thuan, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Binh Dinh and Kon Tum as well as the Ba Dinh District of Ha Noi and the Go Vap District of Ho Chi Minh City.
